Ewha Women’s University

Dominique Perrault's student center, Ewha

Danielle and I recently paid a visit to the campus of Ewha Women’s University in Seoul. It is one of the most beautiful university campuses I have seen. That’s not saying much since I haven’t exactly visited many campuses in my day, but take my word it’s pleasant to look at.

Perhaps the main reason I find the campus so visually appealing is that the architecture is a breath of fresh air (I have always been an admirer of building design and function, as well as the way these two aspects interact). The stone buildings and manicured lawns are a nice break from the typical streets of Seoul. However, the main attraction for me was the recently constructed student center, designed by Dominique Perrault. The structure is a man-made concrete and glass canyon, carved into a hill. The student center is essentially underground and can be accessed through doors in the canyon walls. The canyon itself serves as a passage way with a gentle slope on one side and stone steps on the other. For me the most impressive, or interesting aspect of the structure is a sense of overwhelming size that one gets when standing at either end of the “canyon”. Don’t get me wrong, the thing is huge. But its’ shape coupled with the vertical lines of the glass walls, magnifies that “hugeness”.

Being that I had my camera with me, I proceeded to shoot away. The above picture doesn’t exactly show the largeness of the structure, but I will post one that does in the next day or two.

I think I’ve written way more than I ever intended to on this or any other post, since it is after all a photo blog. So…enjoy the photo!
